and yet i'm still not convinced this article is the take? anesthesiologists fundamentally do not control how long a surgery is -- the surgeon does. my anesthesiologist friend's job situation recently collapsed because the hospital wanted their group to hire more docs but would not guarantee them a number of cases/RVUs -- that's just not a job you can hire for in a high-demand field when anesthesiologists are leaving residency with six-figure debts. for their part, they were trying desperately to get the hospital to run their OR suites better and schedule surgeries more efficiently so that even the existing docs would have better guaranteed work and wouldn't be wasting their time waiting around for the next case, coming into work for only one case, etc. because they did not get paid unless a surgeon was doing a surgery. but the hospital wouldn't change anything or back down so last i heard the anesthesiologists all either retired or left, my friend found a new job with no problem because anesthesiologists are always in demand, and i have no idea how the original hospital is still functioning. and like. yeah they make a lot of money. but medical education is exorbitantly expensive in the us and they also keep you alive and not in pain while somebody slices you open and rummages around in your insides. idk. administrative bloat isn't as sexy of a target for cost cutting. maybe if the insurance companies didn't require so many prior auths

i think the toughest part for me during all this is how fast it's been. going from being totally normal but with gas/bloating/farting....to suddenly having no gas/bloating/farting but experiencing difficulty breathing and high heartrate one time when i ate too much. then during the week having that happen more and more every time i ate. and then having it happen even if i ate hardly anything. and then starting the probiotics the next week and having that solve the difficulty breathing issue but introduce other side effects. and eventually getting to the point where that nerve pain and extreme reduced ability to move my legs/arms and mental confusion was a constant rather than just when i ate. i have felt so helpless through this whole thing and the doctors kept saying 'wait a week for your appointment and get a referral' while the ER was saying 'you need to see a specialist NOW'. and every day i was waiting it got worse. its just so frustrating because if i had been able to see a real doctor on the 27th of july when i ended up in the ER the first time, so much of this pain might have been slowed or prevented. im sitting here being dizzy and unable to do basic things like clean my house or move around much and am looking forward to spending the next four days just trying to survive till i can see a doctor.

my lovely neighbor went out and bought me these drinks called 'orgain' so im drinking that now and just hoping desperately its not going to trigger anything

I HAVE OFFICIALLY STARTED VOLUNTEERING AT A HOSPITAL!

I did my first every shift earlier today (it’s about 11 pm on a Friday night rn) and it was a lot but good! I’m a patient escort rn and a “runner”, I’m the one who has to go around and personally escort patients or visitors around the hospital. I walked nearly 3 miles in total today from all of it. My legs hurt. And it’s a huge ass hospital, so big that I got lost a couple times and one time, I needed help from another volunteer to get back to the lobby.

But after I complete my 100 hours, which will approximately be in late December, I can transfer to a different department and I REALLY want to get to the pediatric playrooms. Volunteering there will be one step closer to my dreams of becoming a child life specialist.

So…yeah. I just wanted to share this because I’m really happy and kinda proud of myself. That’s all.

it was pretty funny. she made me write basic info n the classic symptoms tickboxes, history, etc. sat down. she was just Looking Respectfully at the beginning and then opening the talk upon completion of the forms with "You're so pretty" with a transfixed smile and gyattdamn, (learned this from my roomie) i appreciate that coming from an older woman.

i mean she's prolly in her 30s or 40s but yes. it doesn't feel gross 🕺 she paused and stared sometimes just to say that again, alongside making comments about my speaking voice n shit. it felt like an aunt i never had or something 😭

bc all my aunts i was in contact with were fucked up 🤘

or iunno it just felt so freeing because wow, a compliment on my appearance from someone who isn't my gf, without weird/volatile feelings/intentions? whoaaa. perceived (reasonably) or otherwise. ig it just felt safe in that office. i care about this because a lot of my encounters with others is them being impressed by a skill, a talent, or looks, esp looks bc you can just stand there and that's what people see-- and wanting to use that or exploit that or define me by that and put me on a pedestal instead of acknowledging the person it's attached to, yk? i can't explain very well.

but it's like you are a concept built on the things you can do, and when it comes to the human you are, no one listens.

well. she made me tear up by going "we become different people when we feel that we are understood and loved" when she brought up my gf (who we initially sent there after a relative's suicide last month), who referred me, who apparently told the doc we were together. i didn't expect that because she's very private especially about us, so *hair tuck behind ear* (lol). so it's only fair--

because sometimes people say the love me but only the version of me they hope for, constructed in their heads, the name, refusing accountability...

funny that when we were talking about my gf in passing, she showed up outside the clinic. doc went: well there she is!

oh yeah she's not homophobic too which is WONDERFUL and like it felt like she supports it too instead of just tolerating it.

doc also went on about how much potential she could see from the first impression n shit. it's like... yk how i hear this a lot from other people but it never feels genuine? and how this is somewhat special because that professional also told me "you're already impressive, and i can see you're doing your best, BUT things are hindering you."

in contrast to others', "you're awesome but you're not trying hard enough."

it didn't feel as shallow as all these positive words from other people. because i somehow want to tell them "i can be better; this is not it" but they won't believe me. just going "you're just being humble; look at ME."
